FELLOWSHIPS, AWARDS AND DISTINCTIONS

- Postulation to Jean Delay Prize 2014, granted by the World Psychiatric Association with occasion of the World Congress.

- Reception of the “Vicente Pérez-Rosales” Order, granted by the Chilean-German Association “for his contributions to Chilean culture and to the relationship between Chile and Germany”. This institution was founded in 1907 and this award has been granted only eight times in its history (2013).

- Research Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1965, 1972, 1978 and 2008).

- Named Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Catalonia (2004).

- Named “Master of the Chilean Psychiatry” by the Chilean Association of Neurology, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery (2001).

- Elected one of the 36 Full Members of the Academy of Medicine of the Institute of Chile (1998).

- Prize of the Chilean Association of Neurology, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery for “Extraordinary Contributions to the Specialty” (1994).

- International acknowledgement (1994) of having being the first who described “Bulimia Nervosa” as an independent entity. This disease was described by the undersigned with the name of “Syndrome of hyperphagia and secondary vomit in young women” in an article appeared in the Chilean Journal of Neuropsychiatry in 1972, that is to say, four years before the description of Horst Ziolko (1976) and seven years before the one of Gerald Russell (1979). This acknowledgement took place through the publication in the “International Journal of Eating Disorders” (Volume 16, Number 2, 1994: 117-132) of the original article translated into English and preceded by an introduction about the history of bulimia by Walter Vandereycken.

- International Prize granted by “Dr. Margrit Egnér” Foundation and the University of Zurich, Switzerland, for his “contributions to Anthropological Medicine and Psychology” (1992). This award has been also granted to the well known philosophers Hans-Georg Gadamer and Rainer Wiehl and psychiatrists Hubertus Tellenbach and Wolfgang Blankenburg. 

- Appointed by the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) as only representative of the Spanish speaking world in an ad-hoc commission in charge of investigating the political use of psychiatry in former Soviet Union (1991).

- Annual Award in the category “Science”, granted by Los Andes Editorial, Santiago (1988).

- “Claudio Orrego Vicuña” Award, granted by the Chilean Institute for Humanistic Studies, “for his contributions to humanism” (1986).

 - Invited by the University of Marburg, Germany, to compete for the Second Chair of Psychiatry (1980).

- Research Fellowship of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation (1979-1981).

- German Service of Academic Exchange (DAAD) Fellowship, (1963-1964).
